Rep. Munson secures State Grant for PADS

Elgin, IL…State Representative Ruth Munson (R-Elgin) announced that a $100,000 state grant has been awarded to PADS of Elgin for homeless shelter services at the Douglas L. Hoeft Resource Center.

“I am delighted to have secured this grant for PADS,” said Munson. “They provide an indispensable service to those most in need. I am proud to be able to help them not only provide shelter, but also to assist with their efforts to end the cycle of homelessness.”

PADS provides a safe overnight shelter, including an evening snack, breakfast and connection with support services. Approximately 40 to 50 individuals find shelter with PADS each night.

“We appreciate the support of State Representative Ruth Munson to help the homeless served by PADS of Elgin,” said Dennis Hewitt, executive director of PADS of Elgin. “This funding will allow us to continue to operate and continue our mission as a safe haven for homeless men, women and children within our community.”

PADS of Elgin, Inc., was founded in 1989 as a safe haven for the homeless within the community. Originally established by three local clergymen, the shelter provided emergency housing for Elgin area residents only during the cold winter months.

Today, PADS provides a year-long safe environment for those who find shelter at the Douglas L. Hoeft Resource Center. Additionally PADS expanded its support services in the areas of mental health, housing, healthcare, recovery and education to provide tools needed by the homeless to break the cycle.

“PADS will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Douglas L. Hoeft Resource Center next month,” added Munson. “The timing for this funding couldn’t be a more fitting tribute to Doug Hoeft’s efforts to build the permanent shelter and to the staff and volunteers of PADS who work so hard to help the homeless.”
