Munson's Bill to Create Technology Development Fund for Schools
Unanimously Passes House
ELGIN, IL… Illinois is just one signature away from enacting a bill designed to position students within the state to be competitive players in the rapidly expanding global technology market, without cost to either taxpayers or the state. Senate Bill 1645, sponsored by State Representative Ruth Munson (R-Elgin), recently passed unanimously in the Illinois House, after passing unopposed in the Illinois Senate last month.
"Today's world continues to be dominated by advances in technology," said Munson, who serves as Minority Spokesperson for the House Committee on Computer Technology. "It is vital that our children have access to computers and other up-to-date tools that make them competitive in the job market after graduation."
Munson's bill provides a funding source to purchase and upgrade computers and related technology in Illinois classrooms by permitting the Treasurer to deposit up to 10% of the earnings from technology investments into the Technology Development Fund.
"The Treasurer's Office estimates that as much as $5 million could be set aside within three years to help schools with technological development," Munson explained, "all without requiring taxpayers or the State to help with funding, while at the same time preparing Illinois students to effectively participate in this rapidly expanding global market. Even in a tight budget year we can be creative in finding solutions to help our schools. Everyone wins."
Supported by State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka and the Illinois Education Association (IEA), the bill next moves to the Office of Governor Rod R. Blagojevich for his signature before it becomes law.
